Poets have always talked about Marrakesh, writers have talked about Fes, chefs have been complimenting tagines in Tangier, and now diplomats are talking about Rabat, the city that bloomed in the last millennium. At first glance it may seem dull and quiet, with nothing but the rustle of trees and the sounds of distant cars. But it carries with it luxurious restaurants, kitchens in which the tagine is the king, and streets covered with oak trees, while the roar of its surroundings rises loud and mingling with the wind. It is not a city that opens its arms to tourists, but rather gives its treasures to those who discover it.

Here we were, here we played, and there we stayed awake, and that jasmine is under our window, and the glass veranda is still as we left it, carrying our memories between its walls, and its windows overlooking the city, repeating our songs and poems, hearing the echo of our laughter, our whispers, our conversations, and my mother’s stories that she never gets tired of, and the many poems she has memorized. The veranda also hears the anecdotes and jokes of Abu Nawas, Harun al-Rashid and his wife Zubaydah, Uncle Omar’s jokes and his boisterous laughter, Samia’s melodious voice reciting old stanzas and roles, and finally, hearing our collective voices singing Fairouz’s song harmoniously:

This is me… My biography…

The first chapter of this book, entitled ‘The Biography of Professor Shuaa Hashim Al Yousuf,’ recounts the most important events of her life from the day of her birth until this day, and it includes an analysis and explanation of the important life trials and experiences that the author went through.

The role of family members and the circumstances that had a direct effect on her thinking and behaviour are also mentioned. The author explains and analyzes the emotional and intellectual changes she went through during the different stages of her life.

As for the pillars on which the author built her life, they were cleanliness, discipline, a commitment to learning, to show love and mercy to all beings, and finally, being generous and charitable whenever possible. The author’s main belief is that God Almighty is overflowing with mercy and love, full of grace and forgiveness, and we are required to practice some of that.

As for the second chapter of this book, which is entitled, ‘Intangible Discoveries I Was Fascinated With During My Life’s Journey,’ it revolves around asking many of the more abstract questions that preoccupied the author's thoughts during her life’s journey and then answering them.

When she explains several of the answers at which she has arrived in detail, the most important moral and intellectual discoveries that the author found in herself appear, those that emanated from the depths of her soul during various life experiences. The author also explains some of the wonders she found in the hearts of others close to her in terms of thinking and behavior.

I wrote these lines while recalling every moment that  I passed by when I lost you  my love.. How difficult and cruel those moments are; My tears wetted the pages of my papers, and my heart ached and bled again after your separation.. How hard I had to work, remember and write all those painful moments, and go back and live that dark cold night with all its moments; So that I can convey my feelings to every honest and trustworthy friend who values friendship, and convey to all people the meaning of true and pure friendship and the meaning of loyalty and sincerity to friends. Sincerity is that I remember you and pray for you and insist on praying, and I do not give up or hope and I keep holding on to the rope that binds the living to every dear and dear who has lost or left this mortal world.
