A Loose Dress That Doesn’t Fit Me

I have been standing for half an hour, contemplating the road from my window. An old lady riding a bicycle passed by. A pigeon passed by too, but apart from that no one passed by, and I did not hear anyone’s voice, neither a human voice nor a bird nor a stone. For a moment I felt that I was watching a still image, not a live scene. I finally remembered that today is Sunday and my surprise disappeared; this day, in addition to being a holiday, is a dull day in Germany, a dull, gloomy and desolate day; there is no movement in the streets, nor in the houses, nor movement in the sky, nor on the ground. Sometimes I imagine that the inhabitants of this country speak sign language on Sunday so as not to break the thread of eloquent silence and existential calm on this day. On the outskirts of where I live, the scene becomes more tragic and heavier, resembling mourning ceremonies, or scenes of a curfew; On Sundays in those areas, a foreigner feels lonely, isolated, and as if he has been living a hundred years of isolation.

A Lover, Even If I Don't Belong

It is not easy to love someone, especially when that love is unrequited – to pretend friendship and suppress your feelings while watching them with another. This is Rakan’s experience. As a university student, he meets Flora and is destined to endure the pain of a one-sided love affair, until he is shocked to discover Flora hanging in his apartment!

The shock of this discovery triggers hallucinations and psychological distress. Rakan suddenly opens his eyes to find himself years in the past, changed, with a mysterious tattoo bearing the number 7 on his neck.

Time blurs between reality and imagination, across different worlds. Pain, suffering, longing, remorse, and a loss of identity intertwine with a fantasy of a reunion between Rakan and Flora – a reunion that will never be. Their love story remains incomplete.

Thus begins Rakan’s strange journey. What is the secret of the number 7? And what caused him to travel back in time after Flora’s death?

The words of poems are the butterfly in the garden and the scent of flowers in orchards. It passes by us so it catches our eyes and our hearing rejoices. We smell from it the beauty and we see in it our and others’ deep thoughts. Poetry is not distributed letters, nor flowery words, nor tones and harmonious scale. Poetry is a moments in our lives, the spirit harmonizes with ideas so it expresses that with words: ink on paper. Words that express our feelings and our thoughts and our lives. Yet it differs from others (normal words) because it stays, and it is embossed in the soul and in the ears and the hearing for a long time. The most beautiful meaning of poetry is like a pearl hidden in an oyster: no one can see it except those who tries to open it. In this book I reflect my journey in university and outside it through poetry categorized in mental health, feelings, and relationships. And I added a poet’s manifesto to provide a context for my readers about my background and experience as a student at NYU Abu Dhabi regarding culture and language.

How beautiful it is to pass away in the embrace of those we love, or what we call a beautiful death; it has a different flavor, but only a few will experience it. I have begun to feel that fleeting isolation, and the coldness of the thorny darkness with its faint blue light, and the power of the approaching storm. I leave you with this narrative, along with the sorrow and regret it conceals.
