These are tales that travel between distances, some set in the hills of Bethlehem, where a teenager embarks on a quest for a university degree in a land cloaked in ice, once known as the Soviet Union, spending six years there before returning!

Suddenly, memories flare up, slicing through the gloomy sky like lightning, bringing back echoes of a past filled with university alleys and student housing!

These stories weave their threads from the diary of a student searching for remnants of his past after returning to Bethlehem. After four decades, perhaps more, he writes to himself: “Do you remember, oh self, when we were there?!” Deep within, he hears a confused voice filled with longing: “And have I, oh self, truly returned from there?!”

Nidal Al-Hayek was born in Beit Sahour, in the Bethlehem Governorate, in 1961.

He completed his secondary education in his hometown in 1980.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy in 1986 from Zaporozhye University in the former Soviet Union, and a Diploma in Tourism and History with honors from Bethlehem University in 2014.

He is a member of the Association of Graduates of Russian-speaking Universities, the Russian Cultural Center, and the Palestinian Center for Studies and Dialogue of Civilizations.
