Austin Macauley Publishers – Where Every Great Story Begins!

Our International Publishing Director, Jade Robertson was interviewed by Business Inside Reporter about the impact of the Global Pandemic on the annual sales and the overall business strategy. She talked in detail about how the publishing house has adapted to an environment of decreased social activity. She informed that by quickly changing the marketing strategies, Austin Macauley was able to enjoy an increase in sales by 36% in the UK and 56% in the USA. These strategies included prioritizing and investing in the availability of e-books and audiobooks. She said: “We had to focus further on our own website and selling strengths, rather than relying on other online stores we work with to have our books available to readers.”

She further told that this year was a difficult time given the cancellation of all book fairs and book stores; “We have proactively continued to keep in touch with many in the industry through virtual interactions rather than face to face interactions.” Also, by ensuring uninterrupted flow of services, the company was able to survive and thrive. With people locked inside homes, the company had a moral responsibility to provide means of entertainment and enhancing knowledge in the form of books.

Jade Robertson told the Business Inside Reporter that they were able to fulfil this duty with greater hard work by making ever-great number of e-books, audiobooks and backlist titles available. She further exclaimed that with all this extra effort, this year turned out to be great in terms of annual book sales. About future plans for the company’s progress, Jade Robertson added: “We plan to launch virtual book readings, online book clubs, host writing workshops for upcoming writers and authors by creating a free resource hub that everyone can have access to.”

While sharing her thoughts, she said, “The power of social media and other digital platforms to advertise and promote books was undeniable and publishers could ignore them only at their peril.” She further added, “We look at how we can garner social media to sell books. 90% of people trust online recommendations for books.”

Jade shared some really impressive facts and figures for the UAE across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social channels, highlighting the importance of online marketing techniques in today’s world. She expressed her views, saying “We look at global trends and not just regional trends. Publishers should do their research globally.”  While speaking on the tough competition between attention on video and long-form reading, she was of the opinion that reading stays viable but image-based marketing, particularly on social media, gets much more engagement from the people.

Overall, it was an interesting interactive session amidst presence from some of the world’s leading book-publishing entities. This year, the conference features a three-day schedule with a focus on the latest publishing trends, digital strategies, emerging markets, threats and challenges.

Jade Robertson, International Publishing Director of Austin Macauley Publishers Interviewed by Arabian Business

Arabian Business published an interview on Monday, 14th October 2019, “Lessons from leaders: Jade Robertson, International Publishing Director for Austin Macauley Publishers”. Jade shared the story of her company’s mission, values, successes and upcoming plans. According to her, a strong interest in the Arab market and ever-increasing requests made complete sense to open new avenues in the region. Both, new and experienced authors are being given opportunities, in Arabic and English languages. She further added that she looks forward to involving herself in the educational sector and publishing books in other languages.

Copyrights and counterfeited products, in her opinion, remained the biggest challenge for the publishers worldwide. She discussed her open-door policy for the talented staff members who can come to her and share their ideas. She opens up about how she keeps the staff motivated by giving motivational talks, praising them, setting clear objectives, having appraisals and much more. While answering to a question about one advice that she would give to an old boss of hers, Jade replied, “To be more systematic and to plan for the future”.

On a question about her decision-making process, she said that she assessed the risks and results of her decision before making a decision. Jade also highlighted the importance of social media and online marketing for a business. She mentioned how she enjoys the freedom to explore new markets, check out new opportunities and grow basic ideas to complete the projects. She recalled her first job at the age of 16 when she worked alongside her studies. Jade looks up to her first-ever boss at this job as her mentor. With 30 years’ experience, he trusted Jade and her abilities to run her business. This is where Jade realised her true potential and interest and decided to pursue her studies at the university after working for two years with him.

According to her, for a new employee, “culture is everything”. She summarized the three characteristics a leader should possess with a very simple but straight forward answer to the question – “The three Ps – Patience, Persistence and People-skills”. She surprised the interviewer by telling that she is currently learning the Arabic language. Jade emphasized the art of multi-tasking. She told that she always wanted to be a lawyer while growing up. She shared about her strict schedule to accomplish the daily goals. She likes to have breakfast and a coffee before she leaves her house and her tasks listed-down.

Finally, she expressed her opinion that the world would become a better place if “we all become unprejudiced and accepting of each other, celebrating our differences, instead of looking at them as something that separates us”. She stressed about being aware, knowing and acknowledging the other person’s story. This exactly what Jade Robertson and her team at Austin Macauley Publishers look forward to in the company. The environment is created where every individual’s voice, thoughts, experiences, stories and ideas are being heard. She looks forward to publishing more and more new voices, thus, making the environment “more liberal and inclusive”.

Austin Macauley Publishers and the Nairobi International Publishers Association Seminar. Africa Rising: Realising Africa’s Potential as a Global Publishing Leader in the 21st Century.

We were delighted to be a sponsor for such an innovative seminar this June, together with many key organisations in our community, to name a few; Emirates Publishers Association, Sharjah World Book Capital, Association of American Publishers, Liberty Education UK, Nielsen, The London Book Fair, Emaar and Emirates.

Our minds were broadened by the endless possibilities and progressions the publishing communities within Africa put across. Opinions and insights were provided from the likes of publishers, authors, supporting organisations and governing bodies. Global representatives shared their support and cooperation with the African countries and their mission to transform the future of African publishing.

The seminar featured keynotes by globally renowned authors, decision makers, and industry thought leaders; in addition to panel sessions and workshops on themes addressing the most pressing challenges facing the African publishing industry. These discussions ranged from the importance of copyright protection, the threats of self-censorship and piracy, to the struggle of preserving indigenous languages and development of supporting data for publishing industries.

Africa is home to an incredible amount of spoken languages, a key part of the seminar looked into the progression that has already began in publishing for these native speakers. This diversity is also shared in other continents. Six out of ten children globally are not taught in their mother tongue, causing their learning process to be hindered immediately when they begin education.

Recent growth in technology has benefitted all nationalities by developments in online translations, and by fault, causing many positive impacts on accessing the indigenous languages of Africa. The goal of gaining a one to one textbook to pupil ratio is developing into the goal of every child in Africa having access to a textbook and digital teaching aid. The support of technology has potential to combat many difficulties, that schools in particularly, face when trying to educate.
